The Department of Commerce at St Claret College was launched in 2005 at the inception of the college with two faculty members and 39 students. Currently the department has a large team of experienced and highly qualified faculty and close to 900 students. Over the years SCC has gained the reputation of a top commerce college in Bangalore. The Commerce program in this leading Christian Catholic college has always attracted students with good academic record and the department has produced several Bangalore University ranks. The department offers add on courses like CA, ACCA, CMA and Aviation. The Department aims at a holistic and integral formation of its students, fostering in them a spirit of academic excellence, character formation and social concern, shaping them to become better citizens of the country. The course aims to nurture commerce professionals with high level of knowledge and competence to effectively contribute to the society with commitment and integrity. B. Com Regular

The B.Com. degree was introduced at SCC in 2005, coinciding with the College's founding. This six-semester program offers a solid foundation in business operations and includes specialized courses in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, Marketing, and Human Resources, with electives in Finance, Accounting, Banking, and Insurance during the fifth and sixth semesters.

B.Com with ACCA

The Bachelor of Commerce (International Accounting and Finance) is a specialized undergraduate program that combines academic study with professional certification from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), a globally recognized body. Offered in partnership with ACCA at St. Claret College (Autonomous) in Bengaluru, the program integrates ACCA-accredited papers with core commerce subjects. Students can take external ACCA exams while pursuing their B.Com degree. The ACCA course is a professional program that enables individuals to develop expertise in accounting and finance. The ACCA body administers the certification process, ensuring that candidates meet the required competency levels.

Who is eligible?
Students who have completed two years Pre-University Course of Karnataka or equivalent are eligible to seek admission to ACCA.

Levels in ACCA Course
ACCA has 13 papers in all. During B.Com program, students will have to complete the first 9 papers of ACCA. Only after the student clears the first 9 papers (foundation level), the student is eligible to appear for the remaining 4 Professional papers. A student who clears the BCom program is exempted from 5 of the Foundation Level papers. This means that the student should take up exams for the remaining 4 papers to complete the Foundation Level.

About the ACCA course at St. Claret College, Autonomous
  • St. Claret College offers coaching for the Foundation Level to all those students who have opted for BCOM with ACCA. SCC does not teach the four professional papers; the students have to study these papers after the completion of BCom and after clearing the Foundation level.
  • The fee collected by the college covers only the coaching cost of ACCA Foundation Course. It does not include the Registration/Membership fee and Exam fee which will be prescribed by ACCA.
  • Duration of Training - ACCA foundation coaching starts in III semester and goes on until the VI semester.

Benefit
Students will be awarded with Advance Diploma in Accounting and Business on completion of 9 papers; students will become Affiliate Members on completion of 13 papers and will be awarded Full Membership with ACCA as a designation after 3 years of relevant work experience.

The Commerce Department provides training for CA foundation papers alongside the B.Com course. Becoming a Chartered Accountant requires passing three exams: CA Foundation, CA Intermediate, Articleship, and CA Final. This B.Com Professional course is designed for students with ambitious career goals.

What is a CA Course?
The CA or Chartered Accountant program is a professional certification course that enables an individual to work as a chartered accountant. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India runs the course.

Who is eligible?
Candidates who have complete their 10+2 exams with a minimum of 60% aggregate scores.

Levels in CA Course
The CA Qualification has been divided into three levels

  • CA Foundation Level - 4 Papers
  • CA Intermediate Level- 8 Papers + Articleship for 2 years
  • CA Final Level - 8 Papers

CA Exams
Candidates can appear for the CA exams conducted at various levels to access the CA course. The ICAI conducts all three exams in May and November.

Average Duration of CA Course
• It takes 4 to 5 years to complete all the exams, Article ship, and other Training Programmes of the CA course.


About the CA course at St. Claret College Autonomous
  • St. Claret College offers coaching for the foundation Level to all those students who have opted for BCOM with CA.
  • The fee covers the cost of CA Foundation Course only. It does not cover Registration/membership fee and Exam fee of ICAI.
  • Duration of coaching: CA foundation coaching is provided only during the I year. During the II and III years, students are required to prepare for CA Exams and give their attempts.

B. Com with CMA

SCC offers a B.Com in Strategic Finance (US CMA), integrating the curricula of B.Com and US CMA to prepare students for management accounting and global finance. In partnership with Miles Education, this program aligns with the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) certification from the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), requiring students to take external IMA exams. Graduates can pursue careers as financial analysts, cost accountants, financial managers, and internal auditors.

The course includes the following papers:
PART 1 – Financial planning, performance and Analytics
PART 2 – Strategic Financial Management

75% is Multiple Choice questions and 25% is essay type questions.

Eligibility
Students who have completed two years Pre-University Course of Karnataka or equivalent there to are eligible to seek admission to B. Com with CMA Course.

Course Duration
CMA curriculum is covered from Semester 1 to Semester 5 with the duration of 60 hours approximately per semester. At the end of each paper, they can take up the CMA exams. Exams is conducted in the following months - January- February, May-June or September- October.

With the specialized knowledge and training, CMAs may hold top management position in public and private sectors’ enterprises like Chairman cum Managing Directors, Managing Director, Finance Director, Financial Controller, Chief Financial Officer, Cost Controller, Marketing Manager and Chief Internal Auditor and other important positions.

Fees
The fee collected by the college includes only coaching fees of B.Com and US CMA. CMA Registration fees, Exam registration fee of Paper 1 and 2 and any other charges are to be paid by the students on intimation/notification of Miles Education /IMA.


B. Com with Aviation

The B.Com (Business Analytics) is a specialized undergraduate program that combines commerce with analytical skills. It prepares students for careers in data-driven decision- making across various industries. Conferences

Student Conference - SPARK
The Department of Commerce organizes an intra-collegiate paper presentation “Spark”. This event is organized in order to increase the research aptitude amongst the students. The best three papers also win a cash prize. The analytical and research skills of the students are developed and the students become more competitive when they have to participate in inter- collegiate paper competition organized by other colleges. It helps the students in gaining experience with evaluating and summarizing relevant research papers and it enhances the skills and overall growth of students. As part of the fest the department conducted the student conference to bring out the stage fear of the student and to also improve their communications skills. In addition to studies other activities are also important and the department organized paper presentation as one among those activities which is very much required in today’s World.

Guest Lectures

Department of Commerce conducts several programs for the development of students such as Workshops, Seminars, symposium, curricular enrichment and several others. Guest lecture is one of the initiatives and programs that the department organises to expose students to various other commerce subjects and fields. Commerce department organises different guest lectures on different topics for the students of every year. Guest lectures regarding the new innovation happening in commerce field, Lectures on giving the students an insight on different career opportunities which they can take upon once their education is completed. Alumni Guest lectures are conducted, where the passed out batch students of the college come down to share their work experience. Guest speakers have become an important part of the educational experience for students. They expose students to real-world life experiences from the position of someone who has been there. One important benefit that is derived from having a guest speaker is the enhancement of the students’ educational experience.

Guest Lectures are also divided into guest lecture for the industry and academia.

Faculty Development Program

Department of commerce organized a one day FDP on GST and Indirect Taxes in association with National Association of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN) on 1st October 2019 for all the teaching and staff of St Claret College. The FDP gave elaborate insight of various aspects of Impact of GST on Traders in particular and Consumers in general.

Other activities

Vocational Training:
The department of commerce also offers vocational training programs ‘paper Bag Making’ unit for the students of the department. The students are trained by a group of student trainers who help them in making paper bags of different variety and sizes. The vocational unit has plans to expand to other products as well.

Extension Activities:
The Department of commerce also organizes a number of outreach programmes. It organized sessions on ‘Business Idea Generation” and a ‘Free Computer Training Programme’ for the homemakers of the neighbourhood. The department also takes keen interest in Swachh Bharath initiatives therefore it has organized a lot of cleanliness drive in the neighbourhood. It also organized a variety of competitions for the parents who participated and won prizes. The department also conducted full-fledged two level ‘Basic spoken English Programme’ for the house wives of the neighbourhood. The department also reaches out to the government schools nearby to offer free classes on hygiene and also teach subject related topics to the students. The department also has sensitized the students in understanding the social issues such has women and children empowerment, and has organized a rally on prevention of child abuse. As a part of outreach the department in Association with Indian Cancer society organized ‘Awareness on Cervical and Breast cancer twice’ this was offered for the ladies in the neighbourhood and also for the girl students of the college.

Study tours are periodical trips to relevant destinations which helps the students to learn the subject in more comprehensive and enjoyable way. A study tour of 2-3 days to out station destination for third year students is organised. The main aim of the study tour is to aid students to acquire basic knowledge of functioning of the industry and to relate the class room teaching in reality.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT

The Department of Commerce of St Claret College believes in Industry Academia collaboration to enhance quality education through Industrial visits, on job training and internships. The professional collaborations will enable socio-economic impact among students and industries. The Department seeks the industries to promote research based outcome and need based knowledge to students through projects and research initiatives. It further involves active participation of the Industrial personnel with academic activities based on desired skills for the development of students to industrial setting.

The Department sends students regularly to various Industries to get practical knowledge from RBI, Diary Day, Coco Cola, Garuda Poly Flex, TVS Motors, Malls etc… The main objective of Industrial visits is outlined as under:

Establishing linkages with the industries, academic oriented syllabus for skill development among students.
To promote exchange of knowledge between industry and academics.
To identify pathbrakeing challenges in curriculum and training them according to industrial needs.
To create Entrepreneurial skills among students by visiting various small scale industries.
To collaborate with various industrial and corporate houses in conducting workshops, seminars and interact with experts.

Further the Department has various collaborations like Peenya Industries, Kassia etc.. and actively involving to have tie-ups with MNC’s, Corporates, Industrial Houses and Public Bodies
